John Estrem, CEO
Northeast Residence and Hammer Residences

John has over 25 years of committed service with local nonprofits. He has served as Executive Director of Episcopal Community Services and also as the CEO of Catholic Charities of Minneapolis and St. Paul.

John brings his visionary leadership, passion for service, and gift of collaboration to Northeast Residence and Hammer Residences. He and the leadership teams are working together to merge the two organizations in the upcoming year. John is influential in upholding each organization’s mission by keeping resources accessible for the individuals supported at Northeast Residence and Hammer Residences.

Lin Curran, Director of Operations

Lin Curran is the Director of  Operations, Quality Assurance and Information Technology for Northeast Residence, Inc.  She has been a part of the Northeast Residence team since 1987.  Lin started out working part-time mornings when her daughters were young.  She’s always said, “Working at Northeast Residence is not a job but a way of life”.   Throughout the years Lin has worn many hats at Northeast Residence.   She’s been a direct support staff, lead counselor, program supervisor of the long-term ICF/DD (known as the convent), supervised two waivered sites, worked as the respite assistant for two years, became the Director of QA/IT in 2002 and then became the Director of Operations, QA/IT in 2019.

Lin has participated in setting up almost all of the Northeast Residence homes and programs along with other team members.   She has helped with putting teams together for project committees or to help in crisis situations, mentored many new supervisors and has had the privilege of going on several vacations with individuals served.

Lin is married to Fred Curran, Director of Maintenance, and has two adult

daughters, along with two grandchildren.   In her spare time she enjoys traveling especially if she’s going to visit her grandchildren in Colorado.  Other hobbies include reading, movies, music, technology and 4-wheeling in northern Minnesota.

Lisa Heroff, Director of Finance

Lisa Heroff began her career with Northeast Residence, Inc. in 1996 part-time.  As the company grew she held each position in the Financial Department gaining valuable accounting experience and earning the promotion to Director of Finance in 2008.

Her responsibilities include supervising, assessing and supporting the accounting staff.  She is responsible for final preparation and distribution of monthly financial statements.  Lisa prepares individuals supported budgets while working with Counties, Social Security and families to maintain individuals supported financials.  With knowledge of both cash and accrual accounting systems, Lisa is responsible to prepare and distribute a multi-account budget of approximately $10.5 million. 

Lisa resides with her husband in White Bear Lake, MN and has 3 adult children and 1 grandchild. 

Elijah Berg, Director of Human Resources


Elijah Berg is the Director of Human Resources and started with Northeast Residence in February, 2021. Elijah brings 20 years of experience in Human Resources and has held various HR leadership positions in other industries including Retail, Manufacturing and Healthcare.

Prior to Northeast Residence, Elijah also worked for Hammer Residences off and on for 20 years in various capacities including direct care, management and helping to develop the first Hammer University model which included the Program Manager training program.

Elijah loves the work Northeast Residence does and has a strong commitment to helping support people working in the group homes. Elijah is dedicated to bringing staff to Northeast Residence who share and believe in the Northeast Residence values.

When not working, Elijah enjoys time with his three dogs, gardening and cooking. He also spends time at his family cabin when he can, looks forward to time with his family and friends, and loves to travel.

Fred Curran, Director of Maintenance


Fred Curran is the Director of Maintenance for Northeast Residence, Inc.  He has been employed with Northeast Residence since 1995.  Fred started as a part-time maintenance staff gradually becoming full-time, advanced to Maintenance Supervisor to his current position as the Director of Maintenance.  Prior to his employment with Northeast Residence he volunteered in many maintenance projects such as helping remodel homes, build decks and helped with events.

Fred fully enjoys all aspects of his position including the team of people he works with but more importantly the individuals served.  He enjoys those moments when someone wants to share a special story or just hang with him for a bit and chat.   He has had the pleasure of being able to accompany some of the people served on multiple vacations.  Fred assists with all fundraising events, the employee picnic, annual luau and Halloween bon fire.

Fred is married to Lin Curran, has two adult daughters, along with two grandchildren.   He is a U.S. Military Veteran having served four years in the Army.  Fred enjoys gardening, traveling, spending time up north at the cabin, four-wheeling, hunting and fishing.
