Happy Holidays!

Happy Holidays!

iDecember 01, 2016 by Heidi Holste, Executive Director

Special Olympics is a very special and meaningful experience for the people that participate.  The Special Olympics Bowling season just ended.  Congratulations to all of our athletes that participated and earned medals!  Thank you to our coaches, Carrie Anderson, Lynette Vickerman and Deb Rudolph!  Thank you to our staff that get our athletes there on time and help out on bowling night and at the tournaments!  Thank you to all of you that cheer our athletes on!  I love visiting our homes and seeing the medals and the photos. Next up, Special Olympics Track and Field – when the weather is warmer!

With the election being over, we now know who represents us at the local level and at the national level.  If you don’t know who your own elected officials are, I encourage you to visit this website, it is very easy to use and quick to use http://www.gis.leg.mn/iMaps/districts/.  The legislative session will begin in January and there will be bills introduced to increase rates for the services we provide to the individuals we serve.  Since a significant portion of our budget is for staff wages and benefits, we look forward to advocating along with you for increases.  Please keep your eyes open and your messages going to your elected officials about the sincere need for these increases.

We will only get increases if legislators hear from ALL of us about the importance and need for these increases.  The only way that this becomes a priority is if we tell them it needs to be.  I encourage you to tell them what Northeast Residence means to you and why the rate increases are needed at this time.  In future newsletters I will provide sample letters or talking points you can use, but the best communication is your own personal voice and experience.

I mentioned in the last newsletter that we are planning to go to an electronic newsletter. As of today we do not have a date certain for launching this, but it will be in the first quarter of 2017.  Please e-mail Traci Maruska with your e-mail address to ensure you will still receive this newsletter.  Traci can be reached at tmaruska@nerinc.org.

Thank you to those of you that donated to Northeast Residence during Give to the Max Day and for our Annual Appeal.  If you have not yet donated, but plan to, thank you in advance.   Remember as you are doing any on-line holiday shopping this year that Amazon provides a way that you can donate to your favorite non-profit through Amazon Smile.  It is very quick and easy to sign up and Northeast Residence receives donations through this.

Thank you for this as well!  Your donations make possible things like properly equipped vehicles, Special Olympics participation, adaptive equipment, trips, community events, and other life-elevating experiences. As we enter the holiday season it appears the cold weather is here to stay.  Thank you for your involvement with Northeast Residence and I wish you all a very happy holiday season!
