It is that time of year where we ask you to contact your legislators on behalf of the staff and the people we serve here at Northeast Residence.
In 2014, the legislature did increase rates. It is now 2017 and time again for them to support and include a rate increase in their final budget. This year the Best Life Alliance is asking for a 4% rate increase that would go directly to the people who work in direct care.
The Northeast Residence Advocacy Committee has some events planned to do our part in supporting this. A group of us from the Advocacy Committee as well as others from Northeast Residence will be attending ARRM Day at the Capitol on March 14. If you are interested in attending, you will receive a free t-shirt and have a fun day of supporting rate increases for staff! The Advocacy Committee is also planning individual visits with legislators on March 8. If you are interested in either of these events, please contact Heidi Holste or Joseph Paquette at the main office at 651-765-0217.
If you are unable to attend, your voice is still needed, so please consider taking action. A simple letter or e-mail to your legislators may be the tipping point for them to include an increase in the final budget. Telling them how staff turnover impacts you and your loved one in real life is what they need to hear. Here is the link to know who represents you and their contact information.
I have included some sample messages in this newsletter to get you started on writing to your legislators. Remember to tell your story, even if you have already done this, please do so again. If they continue to hear from us, perhaps they will continue to put the services we provide and your loved ones received at the top of the list of priorities. As many of you know, advocating on behalf of the people we care for is a never ending battle and legislative advocacy is no exception – meaning, writing once is just as important as writing 5 (or more) times.
Thank you for your efforts.
Northeast Residence is in need of new office space to accommodate our staff and to grow our community based programs of Adult Day Care and the Extended Day Program. Not only is it important to secure space for all of these purposes for the current people served, we know that there is significant demand in the communities that we serve to grow our community based programs.
We feel very fortunate to have found a building that can accommodate all of what is described above. We have submitted a purchase agreement to purchase the “Auto Owners Insurance Building” at 2539 County Road E., East in White Bear Lake.
While we feel confident that we are on track to finalize purchase of the building, to achieve our goal we must obtain a Conditional Use Permit from the city to operate our programs in this space. In addition, we are working to ensure the building is in good operating condition and we are working through this process. So far we have received very good feedback from the city leaders and the local residents and businesses in the area. We intend to sign final paperwork for purchase in April or May after we go through the city process and ensure the building is sound and able to work for our intended use. Please contact Heidi Holste if you have any questions at 651-765-0217.
